Most Africans and people of African descent grew up with two spiritual inheritances and were only ever allowed to admit to one. There was the faith that arrived on a ship with a Bible and a flag, and there was the older thing underneath it. The one your grandmother practised quietly, the dreams nobody dismissed, the names that carried meaning, the libation poured before anyone drank.
One of those inheritances got a building and a hymn book. The other got called superstition.
Kelechi Okafor sits down with Adwoa and Solomon of Adeche Atelier at Common Sense Studios for an evening on African spirituality and mythology, and what it means to take it seriously as an adult. Expect a real conversation about cosmology and the gods our ancestors knew by name, about ancestral veneration and why the West struggles to distinguish it from worship, about what colonialism and the mission field actually did to African spiritual life, and about the harder question underneath all of it. Can you reconnect with something your family was taught to be ashamed of, or are you just curating an aesthetic?

Jason Arday broke barriers in British academia and became one of its most prominent Black voices. His story — from extraordinary achievement to intense public scrutiny — raises urgent questions about race, power, media responsibility and the human cost of public judgement.
When does scrutiny become spectacle? When does accountability become a public lynching? And what happens when a human life is lost in the process?
This urgent conversation examines race, media power, academia, institutional responsibility and the treatment of Black public figures — asking who is afforded nuance and humanity, and who is reduced to a headline.
A life has been lost. This conversation honours Jason Arday while asking what his story reveals about power, scrutiny and the media in Britain today.

Awakened is my debut novel Set in a near-future where technology is fully integrated in our homes, and a humanoid AI is running for London Mayor, Pels is a journalist desperate to get to the bottom of a spate of disappearances of young Black British people who are then found dead by bodies of water. But her boss is uninterested in her pursuit, instead assigning her to cover the "unreasonable" protests that locals in Benin are staging in opposition to white tourists heading to retreats to partake in their sacred Spirit Vine rituals. He thinks Pels will 'fit right in' and can show the benefits of this type of tourism.
While Pels is sceptical, she has been having strange dreams in which she sees what seem like celestial beings, who tell her she has an unfulfilled destiny, and so a part of her is intrigued by the ceremonies... She'd rather be helping a friend whose brother has just gone missing back in London, but decides to take her bosses' assignment as leverage to then pursue the missing kids investigation.
But when she partakes of the Spirit Vine ceremony in Benin, it unlocks a strange power within her. She learns that this has been her destiny, and that the missing children are part of a large otherworldly conspiracy that only she can stop. As she returns home to a London in turmoil as the cases of missing kids increase, before she can fulfil her destiny and help redirect the dark fate of her world-a fate controlled by people closer to her than she thinks-first she must come to understand and control her newly awakened abilities...
